The Foundation: Choosing Your Size & Layout

More than just dimensions, the size of your sauna defines its purpose. Are you seeking a private space for solo meditation, or a social hub for family and friends? We’ll help you match the footprint to your lifestyle. Here are some common sizes.

  • Compact Saunas (e.g., 4’x5′, 4’x6′): Perfect for individual use, couples, or fitting into a master bathroom or home gym. These sizes provide an intimate, efficient space for a powerful wellness routine.
  • Mid-Size Saunas (e.g., 5’x7′, 6’x6′): The ideal balance for many families. These layouts often feature L-shaped benches, creating a more conversational and social atmosphere without requiring a massive amount of space.
  • Large Saunas (e.g., 6’x8′, 8’x8′): Designed for those who love to host or desire the ultimate in spacious comfort. With room for multiple people to stretch out, these saunas become a centerpiece for wellness and connection in your home.

The Heart of the Heat: Heater and Control Options

The heater is the engine of your sauna. Your choice determines the character of the heat and steam (löyly). We offer 5 brands of exceptional heaters to power your experience. Below are the three most popular heaters we offer.

  • Iki Pillar Heater with Wi-Fi Control (Authentic Löyly & Effortless Control): This beautiful floor-standing pillar heater is a true statement piece, pairing its massive stone capacity with an intuitive Wi-Fi control system. You gain the freedom to start your sauna from anywhere with your smartphone, ensuring it’s at the perfect temperature the moment you’re ready.
  • Finnleo Designer SaunaLogic 2 (Modern Convenience): This wall-mounted heater pairs with a separate, sleek digital control panel. You get precise temperature management, the ability to pre-set your sauna to be ready when you are, and a clean, contemporary look. It’s the perfect blend of traditional heat and modern convenience.
  • Finnleo Himalaya Rock Tower (The Connoisseur’s Upgrade): This stunning, floor-standing tower is for those who take their steam seriously. Its massive 210-pound stone capacity creates an incredibly soft, radiant heat and produces waves of deep, enveloping löyly. Featuring an integrated water reservoir, it allows you to enjoy both a traditional dry heat and a soft, humid sauna experience.

The Sensory Experience: Interior & Exterior Wood

The wood defines the sauna’s ambiance—its look, its feel, and its scent. We use only premium, furniture-grade woods that are beautiful, durable, and create the perfect environment for relaxation.

All our wood is mill-direct, using only the highest quality, hand-selected wood. All from verified sustainable forests. All wood choices are chosen for their ability to hold up for years (typically decades) in the harsh sauna environment.

All wood that touches skin (benches, backrests, duckboard flooring, heater guard, headrest) is chosen for staying cool to the touch of the skin (knots get hot in the sauna!)

Interior Wood Types Available :

Exterior Wood: The exterior panels can be finished with the same beautiful woods to create a seamless, standalone sauna.  Wood types can be mixed and matched to fit your style and budget.

Lean Back in Comfort: Backrest Designs

Don’t overlook the details that deliver true comfort. A well-designed backrest transforms a bench from a simple seat into a comfortable lounger, providing essential ergonomic support for your mid-back and shoulders, allowing for longer, more relaxing sessions.

Each custom Sisu sauna comes with a standard 2-bar backrest.  There are upgraded backrest versions available.

Set the Mood: Advanced Lighting Options

The right lighting is crucial for creating a truly relaxing atmosphere. Move beyond a simple bulb and create a soft, tranquil glow. We offer a range of modern lighting solutions, including LED light strips installed behind the backrests or underneath the benches to wash the walls with warm, indirect light—perfect for enhancing a state of deep relaxation.

LED strip lighting comes pre-installed behind your backrest. Can also be placed under bench.

  • Cycle through multiple colors, or white
  • Dimmable

Cariitti glass fiber lighting can be installed in the ceiling or on the backrest to create a halo effect.

Puck Lights go into the ceiling.

Your Entrance to Tranquility: Sauna Door Options

Your sauna door sets the tone for the entire room. We offer high-quality options to match your desired aesthetic and level of privacy.

  • All-Glass Door (Standard): The standard choice for a reason. This elegant, heavy-duty tempered glass door creates a modern, open, and airy feeling, seamlessly connecting your sauna to the surrounding room.
  • Wooden Door with Window: For a more traditional or rustic look, a wooden door with a single or multi-pane window provides more privacy while still allowing some light to pass through.
  • Full Glass Fronts: For spacious, luxury indoor saunas.

Frame Your View: Adding Sauna Windows

Our standard sauna window comes in a single pane, tempered glass.  We do offer double pane windows.  They’re available in both clear and bronze tint.  All windows pre-hung in the panels.

Below are our standard sauna window sizes in the custom sauna.  We can do entirely custom window sizing if the below options are not what you’re looking for.

Window Sizes:

  • 12″ x 30″
  • 16″ x 30″
  • 12″ x 60″
  • 16″ x 60″
  • Custom windows sizes are available

A Clean Foundation: Duckboard Walkway

Comfort and cleanliness start from the ground up. A duckboard walkway (in Finnish, ritilä) provides a beautiful, slip-resistant surface that feels warm and comfortable underfoot. It keeps your feet off the main floor of your home and is easily removable for cleaning.

A duckboard walkway comes standard with each sauna kit.  Duckboards sit on the floor of the sauna and are walked on.

Duckboards usually are built in the primary wood species of the sauna.

An additional duckboard can be purchased for outside of the sauna (entryway, etc).

The Finishing Touch: Upper Bench Skirts

For a truly seamless and professional look, consider adding a skirt to the upper bench.

This panel cleanly closes the gap between the upper and lower benches, hiding the bench supports and creating the elegant, finished appearance of a high-end custom-built sauna.

Preparing Your Custom Indoor Sauna

While we handle the complex details, a little preparation ensures your sauna installation goes smoothly. Most of our customers are surprised by how simple the process is—here’s what you need to know to get your space ready for transformation.

Electrical Requirements
Your sauna will need 220V/240V electrical service, similar to an electric dryer or stove. We’ll provide the heater manual beforehand for your electrician to ensure the wiring is sufficient. Most homes already have adequate electrical capacity, but we’ll confirm this during consultation.

Framing & Insulating
If you are converting a pre-framed and insulated space into a sauna, ensure that there is no drywall on the walls and ceiling.  We do offer framing & insulating for custom saunas—ask if this is something you will need.

Ventilation Planning
Proper ventilation is crucial for comfort and performance of the heater.  Ideally each custom indoor sauna vents into an open area with good air circulation.

Moisture Protection
Although our saunas are designed with excellent moisture control, consider the surrounding area. If installing on a concrete basement floor, no additional prep is needed. For installations over finished flooring, we recommend moisture-resistant materials near the sauna entrance where you’ll step out after sessions.

Day of Installation
Our professional installation typically takes 2-3 days. We’ll need access to the space and electrical power for tools. If you’re choosing DIY installation, set aside a couple of days and recruit a helper—while one person can manage it, having an extra set of hands makes the process more enjoyable.

Common Questions

Here are some of the most common questions people ask.

Each custom sauna requires a dedicated 240V circuit. The specific amperage depends on the heater size (e.g., a 4.5 kW heater typically needs a 30-amp circuit). All electrical work must be performed by a licensed electrician to ensure safety and code compliance. We can provide the specific electrical requirements for the model you choose.

Most residential saunas cost $1-3 per session in electricity—less than a trip to a commercial spa. With proper insulation and an appropriately sized heater, your sauna heats up in 30-45 minutes and maintains temperature efficiently.

This is where our expertise shines. We’ll evaluate your space, discuss how you plan to use your sauna, and recommend the optimal size. Generally, allow 2 feet of bench space per person, but we also consider ceiling height, heater placement, and traffic flow. We will guide you through the process.

Quality shows in every detail—from woods that stay beautiful for years to high-quality heaters. Our saunas are built by craftsmen who use saunas daily and understand what makes the difference between adequate and exceptional. Add our local support, proven track record, and the ability to see examples in our showroom, and the value becomes clear.

Typically 6-10 weeks from approved design to installation, though timing varies by season.  Once we start building the sauna we typically complete the job in 2-3 days.  We keep you informed throughout the process.

Almost anywhere! We’ve built saunas in basements, spare bedrooms, master suites, attics, garages, and even large closets. The key requirements are adequate space (minimum 4’x4′), access to 220V electrical service, and proper ventilation. Our team excels at creative solutions for challenging spaces.
