Sauna Heaters: The Heart of Your Sauna

Your heater choice affects everything else in your sauna. Get this wrong, and no amount of fancy accessories will save your sauna experience. The basic math? You need about 1kW per 45 cubic feet of space, plus 10% extra if you’re adding a glass door or large windows.

Electric heaters are what most people go with these days. Finnleo’s units come with a 5-year warranty and rock capacity from 50 to 210+ pounds (more rocks = better löyly). The Designer series with SaunaLogic 2 lets you start your sauna from your phone – genuinely useful when it’s 20 below and you want it hot when you get home.

Wood-burning stoves give you that traditional experience – the crackle of the fire, the smell of burning birch, the whole authentic Finnish thing. IKI’s Pillar heater is a beast – holds enough rocks to give you löyly that’ll make a Finn proud. Just remember you’ll need proper chimney installation and local permits.

Sauna Doors: pre-hung & simple to install

A sauna door takes serious abuse – constant temperature swings, moisture, people yanking it open and closed. Cheap doors warp, their seals fail, and suddenly you’re heating your whole house.

All-glass doors look incredible and make smaller saunas feel bigger. Bronze-tinted glass adds privacy without making the space feel dark. The key detail? Quality handles that stay cool enough to grab without a towel.

Wood-frame doors with glass windows give you that traditional look.  Recommended in outdoor saunas for better durability and latch.

Standard sizes run 24″ x 72″ or 24″ x 80″, but we can get custom sizes if your framing’s already done. Pro move: doors should always swing out for safety, and mount them to open away from the heater so you’re not blasting cold air directly onto the rocks.

Sauna Windows: Light Without Compromise

Windows can transform a sauna from a dark box to an inviting space, but they’re also where many saunas lose heat. The trick is balancing natural light with thermal efficiency.

The more windows you add to your sauna the more heat loss you’ll have. That said, putting window(s) can be a great addition to your custom sauna

Sauna Benches: Where Design Meets Comfort

Benches seem simple until you’re sitting on one that’s too narrow, too hot, or at the wrong height. The standard upper bench sits 36-38″ from the ceiling – high enough to catch the best heat but leaving headroom. Lower benches typically sit 17-19″ below that.

Width matters for comfort: 19-24″ deep lets you sit comfortably or lie down. We build most benches from 2×4 or 2×6 boards with 1/2″ – 5/8″ gaps between boards for air circulation. Skip the fancy curved designs unless you’re really committed to the aesthetic – simple, sturdy construction beats complicated every time.

Wood choice for benches:

  • Abachi – stays cool, but pricey and soft
  • Aspen – good heat resistance, no sap, reasonable price
  • Cedar – smells great, naturally antimicrobial, can be hot
  • Hemlock – neutral smell, stable, good middle ground

Whatever wood you choose, avoid any finishes or treatments. Raw wood only in the hot room.

Sauna Backrests

Backrests serve double duty – comfort and protecting the wall from body oils.

All of our custom saunas come with a standard 2-bar backrest. Upgraded backrests are available.

Sauna Scents & Aromatherapy

Sauna scents aren’t just air freshener – they’re part of the experience. Eucalyptus opens your airways, birch is traditional Finnish, and lavender helps you relax. Always use oils specifically made for sauna use – regular essential oils can combust on hot stones.

Mix a few drops in your water bucket, never pour concentrated oil directly on stones. Start light – sauna heat amplifies scents. And here’s a Minnesota secret: fresh birch branches (vihta) in summer give you the most authentic aroma you can get.

Buckets & Ladles: Simple Tools, Big Impact

That satisfying hiss when water hits hot rocks? That’s what a proper bucket and ladle are for. Plastic melts, metal gets too hot – you want wood or heat-resistant materials designed for sauna use.

Thermometers & Hygrometers: Know Your Numbers

Mount it at head level when seated on the upper bench, away from the heater’s direct path.

Temperature sweet spots:

  • Traditional sauna: 175-195°F (80-90°C)
  • Infrared sauna: 120-140°F (50-60°C)
  • First-timers: Start at 160°F (70°C)

Hygrometers (humidity gauges) are less critical but helpful if you’re dialing in your löyly. Traditional saunas run 10-30% humidity. Add more water for more steam, but remember – higher humidity makes the same temperature feel much hotter.
