Designer B Series Sauna Heater – Frequently Asked Questions

1. What are the different models available and what room sizes do they accommodate?

Answer: The Designer B Series offers three models:

  • Designer 4.5B (4.5 kW): Suitable for rooms with 12-74 sq ft floor area and 74-100 cubic feet volume
  • Designer 6.0B (6.0 kW): Suitable for rooms with 21-175 sq ft floor area and 74-175 cubic feet volume
  • Designer 8.0B (8.0 kW): Suitable for rooms with 31-250 sq ft floor area and 74-250 cubic feet volume

All models can accommodate ceiling heights from 74″ minimum to 96″ maximum.

2. What electrical requirements do I need for installation?

Answer: The electrical requirements vary by model and voltage:

Designer 4.5B:

  • Single phase: 208V (21.6 amps) or 240V (18.8 amps) – requires 10-2 wire with ground
  • Three phase: 208V (12.5 amps) or 240V (10.8 amps) – requires 12-3 wire with ground

Designer 6.0B:

  • Single phase: 208V (28.8 amps) requires 8-2 wire, 240V (25 amps) requires 10-2 wire
  • Three phase: 208V (16.7 amps) or 240V (14.4 amps) – requires 12-3 wire with ground

Designer 8.0B:

  • Single phase: 208V (38.5 amps) or 240V (33.3 amps) – requires 8-2 wire with ground
  • Three phase: 208V (22.2 amps) requires 10-3 wire, 240V (19.2 amps) requires 10-3 wire

All installations must use copper wire only, suitable for minimum 90°C, and must be grounded per NEC requirements.

3. What are the minimum clearance requirements for safe installation?

Answer: Minimum clearances to combustible materials vary by model:

Designer 4.5B:

  • Front: 3.0″, Sides: 3⅝”, Back: 4.0″, Top: 10¾”, Guard rail height: 23″

Designer 6.0B:

  • Front: 4.0″, Sides: 4⅝”, Back: 5.0″, Top: 10¾”, Guard rail height: 23″

Designer 8.0B:

  • Front: 5.0″, Sides: 5⅝”, Back: 6.0″, Top: 11½”, Guard rail height: 23″

Additionally, maintain minimum 44″ clearance from ceiling above heater and 2″ minimum clearance from heater to wooden surfaces like benches and side walls.

4. How do I properly place the rocks in the heater?

Answer: Proper rock placement is critical for safe operation:

  1. Use only the rocks supplied with the heater (other types may void warranty)
  2. Rinse rocks with water before placing
  3. Place smaller rocks first around the outer perimeter
  4. Fill all four sections: front, two center sections between elements, and back
  5. Place rocks loosely to allow air circulation – packing too tightly may trip the high limit switch
  6. Rocks must completely cover all heating elements
  7. Cover element tops with minimum 2-3″ of rocks
  8. Never operate the heater without rocks in place
  9. Install the guard rail with provided screws after rock placement

5. How does the timer system work?

Answer: The heater features a “9 plus 1” timer system:

Immediate Operation: Turn the dial clockwise past the “off to 1” section, then turn back counter-clockwise until you hear a “click” near the “on” position. This puts it in the one-hour operating zone for immediate heating.

Delayed Start: Set the timer dial anywhere in the “1 to 9” zone to delay the start by up to 9 hours. The heater will automatically turn on after the selected delay time.

Operating Zone: The area from “OFF” to “ON” is when the heater actually operates. The “9” to “ON” area is the delay zone where the heater will not operate but is programmed to start later.

6. What should I do if the high limit control keeps shutting off the heater?

Answer: If the high limit control repeatedly trips:

  1. Immediate Reset: Turn timer to zero (off), let heater cool, then press the reset button on the bottom of the heater
  2. Check Rock Placement: Improperly placed or deteriorated rocks are the most common cause. Rocks may have broken down over time, reducing airflow
  3. Rock Maintenance: Remove rocks that are smaller than 2″ pieces and ensure proper loose placement per Diagram 10 in the manual
  4. Ventilation Check: Ensure proper room ventilation (6 air changes per hour) and that vents aren’t blocked
  5. Professional Service: If the problem persists after checking rocks and ventilation, contact service at 1-888-780-4427

7. What maintenance is required to keep the heater operating properly?

Answer: Regular maintenance includes:

Daily: Inspect that controls and system are off at end of each day

Weekly: For daily-use saunas, wash down the room to keep clean and air fresh

Monthly: Wipe down heater with damp cloth to remove lint and dust

Annually:

  • Remove and clean rocks, replacing any that are crumbled or smaller than 2″
  • Inspect benches and supporting structures for deterioration, dry rot, or abuse
  • Replace any deteriorated boards immediately

General Cleaning: Use soap or detergent in warm water with scrub brush for perspiration stains. Badly soiled surfaces may require sanding. Always use towels or mats on benches and floors.

8. Can I relocate the control knobs to a different position on the heater?

Answer: Yes, the controls can be relocated to the front or either side for easier operation. This should be done before mounting the heater to the wall:

  1. Lay heater on its back
  2. Remove control knobs by pulling straight off
  3. Unsnap plastic label plates from electrical enclosure sides
  4. Remove screws from left and right sides of electrical box and bottom cover
  5. Remove painted trim piece from front of box
  6. Slide bottom cover toward back of heater
  7. Carefully move controls to new position
  8. Reassemble in reverse order with original hardware
  9. Use plastic label plates to cover unused mounting positions
  10. Ensure no wires are damaged during the process

9. What are the proper sauna room construction requirements?

Answer: Key construction requirements include:

Door Safety:

  • No permanent locking or latch systems
  • Use only magnetic catches, friction catches, or spring/gravity loaded closures
  • Door must always open outward
  • Mount WARNING placard on door at eye level

Electrical:

  • No electrical receptacles inside sauna room
  • All heaters and controls must be grounded per NEC

Insulation & Structure:

  • Minimum R12 insulation in 16″ on center 2×4 stud walls
  • Recommended minimum flooring thickness of 5/8″
  • Install CAUTION placard on interior wall above heater

Other Requirements:

  • No showers in sauna room
  • Fire sprinkler systems must be rated for sauna temperatures
  • Light fixtures must be located to avoid burn hazards
  • Never use wood stain, seal, or preservative inside sauna room

10. What ventilation is required for the sauna room?

Answer: Proper ventilation requires approximately 6 air changes per hour:

Vent Placement:

  • Fresh air inlet: Directly below the heater in the sauna wall
  • Air outlet: Lower than upper benches, as far as possible from heater, about 2 feet higher than fresh air inlet

Vent Sizing: Use these formulas to determine minimum vent opening:

  • For rooms under 31 sq ft: V ≥ 9.3 square inches
  • For rooms 31 sq ft or larger: V ≥ 0.3R square inches (where R = floor area in square feet)

Example: A 50 sq ft room would need minimum vent openings of 0.3 × 50 = 15 square inches each for inlet and outlet.

Proper ventilation helps maintain consistent temperatures and air quality while reducing temperature variations throughout the room.
