About The Origin Outdoor Saunas

The Origin Series sits between two ends of the outdoor sauna market. DIY kits hand you the parts and a manual. Origin is a fully-built sauna in three standard sizes — same Finnish materials and same Finnleo heater as our custom work, delivered finished in 6-8 weeks.

We build the whole thing in our Cokato shop: framing, insulation, paneling, benches, heater, roof, floor. It arrives on a shed hauler and gets placed on the pad you’ve prepared. Your electrician wires the heater. You download the SaunaLogic app and take your first steam.

Three sizes — 5×7, 6.5×8, and 8×8. Four bench layouts each. Customization options for interior wood, porch, siding, windows, and lighting.

Key Features & Benefits

These saunas are built to handle Minnesota winters and deliver real heat. Here’s what’s actually in the box.

Grade-A Nordic White Spruce Interior

Our spruce comes from trees grown north of 60° latitude in Finland, near the Arctic Circle. About 80 years of slow growth produces tight grain with only small, living knots — the kind of wood that’s hard to find in cheaper softwood.

Why it matters: sweat doesn’t penetrate the way it does in standard whitewood, so the sauna keeps smelling fresh session after session. Heated, the spruce gives off a subtle Scandinavian forest scent.

8kW Finnleo Designer SL2 Heater

Finnleo’s go-to residential heater. Clean, classic look. Fast heat-up. Durable build. Compact footprint takes up minimal floor space, which leaves more room for benches.

Enough power for all three Origin sizes — no need to step up to a 9kW or run a 50A circuit. Designed to run daily for years.

SaunaLogic 2 Wi-Fi Control

Start your sauna from your phone so it’s preheated by the time you walk out the back door. The SaunaLogic 2 connects over Wi-Fi to the SaunaLogic app on iOS or Android — set temperature, timer, and lights from anywhere.

Delayed start works up to 24 hours out. Save your favorite settings for one-tap recall. Full-glass touchscreen, water-resistant, UL/ETL certified.

R-13 Insulation with 2x4 Framing

Full wall-cavity insulation, not the thin foam sheeting you see in budget outdoor kits. R-13 holds heat in more effectively — especially in a Minnesota January when it’s -10° outside.

The 2×4 framing gives the structure real wall depth. The sauna feels solid, holds temperature longer between löyly throws, and quiets exterior noise.

origin 5x7 outdoor sauna front view tall

Origin 5x7

The first Finns in Minnesota built their saunas before their houses. Small, solid, no wasted space.

The Origin 5×7 comes from that same thinking — our most popular outdoor size, with four bench layouts, Finnish spruce, and a Finnleo Wi-Fi heater. Same materials and construction as the larger models.

  • Interior: 60″ D × 84″ W × 84″ H
  • Exterior: 67″ D × 91″ W × 102″ H
  • Roof: 96″ × 110″
  • Seats: 3 (Classic) to 4 (L-Left, L-Right, or Lounge)

Origin 6.5x8

Finnish families built saunas big enough to share — longer benches, more room to stretch out.

The Origin 6.5×8 follows that logic. About 11 inches of added depth over the 5×7. Same Finnish spruce, same Finnleo heater, same four layouts. This is the size most families land on.

  • Interior: 71″ D × 89″ W × 84″ H
  • Exterior: 78″ D × 96″ W × 105″ H
  • Roof: 102″ D × 110″ W
  • Seats: 3-4 (Classic) to 4-5 (L-Left, L-Right, or Lounge)

Origin 8x8

The old Finnish saunas in rural Minnesota had to fit everyone — family, neighbors, whoever showed up.

The Origin 8×8 is built for that kind of use. A full 89″ × 89″ inside with room for 4-6 people. The L-Bench and Lounge layouts really open up at this size. Same Finnish spruce, same Finnleo heater, same build. If you sauna with a group, this is the one.

  • Interior: 89″ D × 89″ W × 84″ H
  • Exterior: 96″ D × 96″ W × 105″ H
  • Roof: 110″ D × 117″ W
  • Seats: 4-5 (Classic) to 5-6 (L-Left, L-Right, or Lounge)

Four bench layouts

Every Origin model comes in four configurations. The upper bench is your sitting bench. The lower tier is a step and footrest.

Classic — Stadium-style. 24″ upper bench along the back wall, lower step in front. Forward-facing, traditional. Included at base.

L-Left — Upper bench wraps from the back wall down the left side. More upper-tier seating than the Classic. Choose based on door placement and how you want to walk in.

L-Right — Mirror of the L-Left. Same dimensions, same capacity. Choose based on your site and door orientation.

Lounge — Heater centered on the back wall, two upper benches facing each other. Social, face-to-face. The 8×8 Lounge has the most legroom and is the most comfortable version of this layout.

Interior Wood Upgrades

Nordic White Spruce comes standard. Three upgrades are available across all three sizes:

  • Knotty Cedar — Rustic cedar character at a lower price point than clear cedar.
  • Clear Canadian Hemlock — Neutral tone, hypoallergenic, even heat radiation.
  • Clear Western Red Cedar — The classic sauna wood. Aromatic, naturally resistant to bacteria and decay.

How it Works

Choose Your Sauna

Pick your model, bench layout, exterior color, and any upgrades.

Prepare Your Site

While we build, you prep two things:

  • Foundation — A flat, level pad. Three options:
    • Compacted gravel — 8-10″ of Class 5, compacted in lifts (most popular)
    • Concrete slab — 4″ on a gravel base (most permanent)
    • Patio pavers — on compacted gravel with leveling sand
    • Pad should extend 4-12″ beyond the sauna footprint on all sides.
  • Electrical — 240V dedicated circuit (40A for 8kW heaters, 50A for 9kW). Hire a licensed electrician — we can recommend one. Plan the electrical run before the sauna arrives.

We Build It

We build your entire sauna in our shop — framing, insulation, paneling, siding, benches, heater, controls, roof, and floor.

Delivery

  • Your finished sauna arrives on a shed hauler and is placed directly on your prepared pad. You’ll need a flat, clear path from the street to the final spot — wide enough for the sauna to pass through. We’ll discuss site access during your consultation.
  • Free delivery within 75 miles of Cokato. $4.50/mile beyond.

Connect and Sauna

Your electrician wires the heater. Download the SaunaLogic app, connect to Wi-Fi, and take your first session.

Lead time: Typically 5-8 weeks from order to delivery.

Common Questions

Here are some of the most common questions people ask.
The largest model (8×8) has a 96″ x 96″ exterior footprint — that’s 8 feet by 8 feet. Add 4-12 inches on each side for the pad, and you’re looking at roughly a 9′ x 9′ area. The 5×7 only needs about a 6′ x 8′ pad. You’ll also need a clear path from the street wide enough for the sauna to pass through on delivery day.

Three options: compacted Class 5 gravel (8-10 inches deep, most popular), a 4-inch concrete slab on gravel (most permanent), or patio pavers on compacted gravel with leveling sand. The pad should extend 4-12 inches beyond the sauna footprint on all sides. Most people go with gravel — it drains well and costs less than concrete.
A 240V dedicated circuit with 40-amp service for the 8kW heater. You’ll need a licensed electrician to run the wiring from your panel to the sauna location. Plan the electrical run before the sauna arrives so your electrician can wire it the day of delivery or shortly after. We can recommend electricians in the area if you need one.

Typically 6-8 weeks. We build the sauna in our shop while you prepare your site (pad and electrical). Once it’s delivered and your electrician connects the heater, you’re ready to go.

An 8kW heater running for an hour uses about 8 kWh of electricity. At $0.10/kWh (Minnesota average), that’s roughly $0.80 per session. If you sauna four times a week, expect $15-$30/month depending on session length and outdoor temperature.
