Himalaya SL2 Series Sauna Heater – Frequently Asked Questions

1. What are the different models available and what room sizes do they accommodate?

Answer: The Himalaya SL2 Series offers two models:

  • Himalaya SL2 7.0 (6.8 kW): Suitable for rooms with 21-175 sq ft floor area and 175-350 cubic feet volume
  • Himalaya SL2 9.0 (9.0 kW): Suitable for rooms with 38-310 sq ft floor area and 310-500 cubic feet volume

Both models can accommodate ceiling heights from 75″ minimum to 96″ maximum.

2. What electrical requirements do I need for installation?

Answer: The electrical requirements vary by model and voltage:

Himalaya SL2 7.0:

  • Single phase: 208V (32.7 amps) or 240V (28.3 amps) – requires 2 #8AWG wire with ground
  • Three phase: 208V (18.9 amps) or 240V (16.4 amps) – requires 3 #10AWG wire with ground

Himalaya SL2 9.0:

  • Single phase: 208V (43.3 amps) or 240V (37.5 amps) – requires 2 #6AWG wire with ground
  • Three phase: 208V (25.0 amps) or 240V (21.7 amps) – requires 3 #8AWG or 3 #10AWG wire with ground

All installations must use copper wire only, suitable for minimum 90°C, and must be grounded per NEC requirements.

3. What are the minimum clearance requirements for safe installation?

Answer: Minimum clearances to combustible materials are the same for both models:

Both Himalaya SL2 Models:

  • Front: 3.0″, Sides: 2.5″, Back: 2.5″, Top: 15.5″
  • Temperature sensor: 3″ from ceiling directly above heater
  • Minimum 44″ clearance from ceiling above heater

The Himalaya series has more compact clearance requirements compared to other Finnleo models.

4. How do I properly place the rocks in the heater?

Answer: Proper rock placement is critical for safe operation:

  1. Use only the rocks supplied with the heater (other types may void warranty)
  2. Rinse rocks with water before placing
  3. Place larger rocks at the bottom and smallest at the top
  4. Place rocks loosely to allow air circulation – packing too tightly may trip the high limit switch
  5. Rocks must completely cover all heating elements
  6. Never operate the heater without rocks in place
  7. Install the guard rail with provided screws after rock placement

5. How does the SL2 control system work?

Answer: The Himalaya SL2 features the advanced SaunaLogic 2 digital control system:

Control Features:

  • Digital temperature display and control
  • Programmable timer functions
  • Remote temperature sensor (30-foot wire included)
  • Can be mounted inside or outside sauna room
  • Control size: 3⅜”W × 5½”H × ¼”D

Operation: The SL2 system provides precise temperature control with digital readout and programmable operation for consistent sauna experiences.

6. What should I do if the high limit control keeps shutting off the heater?

Answer: If the high limit control repeatedly trips:

  1. Immediate Reset: Turn control off, let heater cool, then press the reset button
  2. Check Rock Placement: Improperly placed or deteriorated rocks are the most common cause
  3. Rock Maintenance: Remove rocks smaller than 2″ pieces and ensure proper loose placement
  4. Ventilation Check: Ensure proper room ventilation and that vents aren’t blocked
  5. Sensor Check: Verify temperature sensor is properly mounted 3″ from ceiling
  6. Professional Service: If problem persists, contact qualified service technician

7. What maintenance is required to keep the heater operating properly?

Answer: Regular maintenance includes:

Daily: Inspect that controls and system are off at end of each day

Weekly: For daily-use saunas, wash down the room to keep clean and air fresh

Monthly: Wipe down heater with damp cloth to remove lint and dust

Annually:

  • Remove and clean rocks, replacing any that are crumbled or smaller than 2″
  • Inspect benches and supporting structures for deterioration
  • Check all electrical connections
  • Verify sensor mounting and wire condition

General Cleaning: Use soap or detergent in warm water with scrub brush for perspiration stains.

8. Can the SL2 control be relocated to a different position?

Answer: Yes, the SL2 control offers flexible mounting options:

Mounting Options:

  • Inside sauna room on any wall
  • Outside sauna room for convenience
  • Control size allows for easy wall mounting
  • 30-foot sensor wire provides flexibility for sensor placement

Installation Notes:

  • Sensor must be mounted 3″ from ceiling directly above heater
  • Control should be mounted at convenient height for operation
  • All wiring must be performed by qualified electrician

9. What are the proper sauna room construction requirements?

Answer: Key construction requirements include:

Door Safety:

  • No permanent locking or latch systems
  • Use only magnetic catches, friction catches, or spring/gravity loaded closures
  • Door must always open outward
  • Mount WARNING placard on door at eye level

Electrical:

  • No electrical receptacles inside sauna room
  • All heaters and controls must be grounded per NEC
  • CB Box can be inside or outside sauna room

Insulation & Structure:

  • Minimum R12 insulation recommended
  • Proper vapor barrier installation
  • Install CAUTION placard on interior wall above heater

Other Requirements:

  • No showers in sauna room
  • Fire sprinkler systems must be rated for sauna temperatures
  • Never use wood stain, seal, or preservative inside sauna room

10. What ventilation is required for the sauna room?

Answer: Proper ventilation requires approximately 6 air changes per hour:

Vent Placement:

  • Fresh air inlet: Below the heater in the sauna wall
  • Air outlet: Lower than upper benches, as far as possible from heater

Vent Sizing: Use these guidelines for minimum vent opening:

  • For rooms under 31 sq ft: Minimum 9.3 square inches
  • For rooms 31 sq ft or larger: 0.3 × floor area in square feet

Example: A 100 sq ft room would need minimum vent openings of 0.3 × 100 = 30 square inches each for inlet and outlet.

Special Considerations for Himalaya SL2:

  • Higher power output requires adequate ventilation
  • Sensor placement critical for proper temperature control
  • Ensure ventilation doesn’t interfere with sensor readings
